Chapter 15/

Yet again, Spark woke with a start. He wondered how many times he could possibly wake up confused and frightened in the course of several weeks. Taking view of his surroundings, he found himself in what had potential to be a terrible situation.

He was in a room. There were no windows. The door was probably locked. And his side hurt like hell. That much he was certain of.

The walls were cold. The door was metal. A sole light bulb hung from a string on the roof. He was surrounded in rust. Rust…or blood? His side hurt again. I'm beginning to hate all this, Spark thought to himself. The fox crossed his fingers and pulled his shirt up slowly.

Blood. His blood. And a wound in his torso that he certainly wouldn't be forgetting about anytime soon. Thankfully it was no longer bleeding, but if the stains were any judge, he'd lost a considerable amount of the stuff.

"Well Spark," he said to himself, "You've done it again. Just when you'd gotten close to getting some answers, you wind up locked and injured in some God-forsaken place where there's almost no hope of getting out.

"Granted…if you've been through this before, who's to say I can't get out again?"

He pulled himself up with much effort and grunting, then tested the door, half hoping it to be unlocked and half certain it wouldn't be.

Locked. Of course. It was always locked. Spark slumped against the wall again. He couldn't really do anything, so he'd wait in here until something happened.

Once again his thoughts sailed off into the ocean of his mind. Robbery. Crash. Veil. Car. Lake. Vic. Death. Ventra. Mission. Somehow everything led him here, wounded and alone in a small dimly lit room. Nothing made sense anymore. Did anything ever make sense? He had really been hoping to figure something out. He was so sure that on board that airship he had been close to something. Close to recent events, like the murder of Veil's father. Or close to past events, like the murder of his own parents. How could he have let this opportunity slip by him?

And to make matters worse, he was probably going to die. No one gives you a nasty wound like the one he'd just obtained and then locks you in a room only to come back shortly and let you out. No, someone wanted him dead.

He couldn't figure it out. Would it even matter anymore? Surely, if he was dying here, nothing really mattered. Veil, the only one he'd ever really loved was probably in similar situation. For all he knew she was dead already.

Yeah. It was probably better to think of her as dead. He didn't want to imagine other scenarios; scenarios where she was stuck on some stupid airship the rest of her life, or worse, where she met someone else and forgot all about him.

Stupid, he thought, that in a time like this I'm getting jealous over hypothetical situations.

</I>

There wasn't a whole lot he could do. Things were coming back to bite him in the butt. He involved himself in matters he shouldn't have involved himself in and now, as a result, he was paying for it.

What would Vic say in a situation like this? "Nothing short of a miracle we managed to make it this far." Yeah. That sounded like him. Always looking on the bright side, or at least giving others the appearance that he was.

It was a shame, really. He'd imagined situations where Veil managed to uncover some dirt about Byron's operations and then he used his fighting skills to take the deranged bird and his operations down. Situations where Spark accidentally figured something out, then fights had ensued, the airship was crashing, and in a moment of blind self sacrifice, he rescued Veil, but lost his own life, of course, not without taking that damn bird with him.

Well…none of this would be happening anymore.

Was this how it was going to end? Would he die alone in a tiny room, wounded and hurt, and still left without answers? It was like every story he'd read, every movie he'd seen, except the hero didn't pull through in his crucial moment. He made some dreadful mistake and wound up not fulfilling what he was supposed to do. Sometimes, life just has a way of tormenting you. Spark was learning the hard way.

Hours passed. Pretty soon he was sure days had passed, but he didn't know how many.

The hunger gnawed at him evilly. The thirst…the thirst was so much worse. And his wound…he was pretty sure it had gotten infected.

Lying there on the floor, Spark wondered what would kill him first. Not hunger…no. You could last longer without food than you could do without water. But the infection? It was spreading rapidly. He could get violently ill pretty soon. And who knew what had been in this room? It definitely wasn't the cleanest he'd ever been in. Something nasty probably got into his system.

Things weren't looking good.

More time passed. He wasn't sure how much more he could take. He was tired.

So tired. He wanted to lie down and sleep forever.

Was that what dying was like? He wasn't sure. Spark had always told Vic and anyone else who asked that he wasn't religious. Now, so close to death, he was beginning to second guess himself.

Was there a God? Was there an afterlife? These questions began to scare him. He shoved them out of his mind and lay against the wall.

Sleep will take my mind off things. Yeah, that's what I'll do. I'll sleep…

Spark's train of thought snapped to a close. His eyes closed and he slumped forward.
